Me and my partner, now husband - were talking about life goals early on in our relationship, we both wanted children and we explored a few options. Having known other couples who had adopted and speaking to them about their journey was what helped make us decide it was the right route for our family.
I was nervous making the first enquiry and really didn’t understand the process. I spoke to a few agencies and when we called adoption@heart, the phone call was friendly and informative and we were invited to an online workshop which explained the process. This is when we decided it was the right time and we had found the right agency.
I was initially nervous about having a social worker, but once approved we were assigned Charlotte as our social worker. She guided us through the process and has been such great support throughout, so much so that we requested her again as we are currently going through the process again to grow our family.
There are so many moments of joy being a parent, it’s those cheeky smiles, the cuddles, being there for the big moments - a special memory for me was the first time hearing our daughter say Daddy.
Becoming Daddy to our little girl has really changed my life, of course there are challenging times but it is the biggest achievement and most rewarding of my life.
I would say to anyone from the LGBTQ+ community that adoption is for everyone, we have never had any issues or any judgement, people accept us as a family and we have had nothing but support. I would say reach out to other LGBTQ+ adopters speaking to other families like ours really helped us through the journey.
