LGBTQ+ and Considering Adoption?

LGBTQ+ and Considering Adoption?

Since the Adoption and Children Act 2002 came into force in 2005, same-sex couples and single LGBTQ+ adopters have had the legal right to adopt. The number of children being adopted by lesbian, gay, bi or trans parents grows each year.

Here are five facts about LGBTQ+ adoption with Adoption@Heart:

  1. Did you know that 1 in 6 adoptions in England are to same sex couples? In 2021/2022, 23% of Adoption@Heart’s approved adopters were LGBTQ+ applicants and this number is increasing year on year.
  2. We actively encourage prospective adopters from the LGBTQ+ community to come forward to enquire about adopting a child and actively involve previous adopters to help us to do this. Read some of their case studies and blogs to hear their stories.
  3. Adoption@Heart is a member of New Family Social, a UK charity led my LGBTQ+ adopters and foster carers. The charity exists to support you on your journey to becoming parents and also to work with agencies to develop services to be as LGBTQ+ inclusive and friendly as possible. As an adopter with Adoption@Heart, you will also be able to access their services and support.
  4. We already welcome many enquiries from LGBTQ+ prospective adopters so you’re likely to build up a network of other people also embarking on their adoption journey that you can chat to along the way.
  5. We offer a buddy scheme to prospective adopters who are going through the assessment process so that you can ask for support from someone that has been on the journey themselves.

If you are considering adoption, please get in touch with Adoption@Heart via our contact form and a member of the team will be in touch as soon as possible to talk through the adoption process. Alternatively, you can book onto an information event to find out more.
